The mangroves of Ratnagiri, along the Konkan coast of southwest Maharashtra were, until recently, a relative mystery. Through the efforts of dedicated botanists and ecologists, they are now being mapped, and their diversity chronicled. On one such project visit to explore this unknown, we traveled with companions who were of the “always believe something wonderful is going to happen” mindset when it came to spotting wildlife. This did not always work out, particularly with respect to the otters, whom we tracked in vain for 3 whole days. On the other hand, we did manage to see the usual mangrove associated fauna; their sighting brought comfort in the knowledge that the mangroves are healthy.
